RAP BLIPMAP California-Nevada Viewer For experienced BLIPMAP users - requires javascript
Registration is required for this viewer to work.
You can register at the
Register Page;
further information is available at the
Registration Information webpage. Created by Dr. John W. (Jack) Glendening, Meteorologist
BLIPMAPs predict thermal soaring conditions resulting from surface
heating of the Boundary Layer, by post-processing numerical weather
model predictions to provide parameters suited to the needs of soaring
pilots. Users of this viewer are assumed to be familiar with
BLIPMAP and its parameters, as described on the CA-NV 21Z BLIPMAP webpage and on the parameter
information webpage.
TO CREATE A BLIPMAP IMAGE SEQUENCE: (1) Select a day, a time, and a parameter
(2) Single click the "INSERT MAP" button
(3) Repeat for additional day/time/parameter(s)
(4) Single click "FRAME" buttons to move through images
Buttons: "INSERT MAP" inserts selected map following the current image
"List LOAD" loads lastest maps in SAVE image list of favorite maps
"List SAVE" sets SAVE image list to current image list (uses cookie)

BLIPMAP NEWS (Latest: Apr 18, 2024)
DrJack sez: Dec 29: Dallas Gliding Association
has just become an "Angel"
and DrJack thanks them for their support.
Dec 22: Do hawks use BLIPMAPs?
Apparently so, or at least that is one possible interpretation of the
findings of Canadian naturalist Paul Summerskill who studied migration
routes within the eastern and central continental flyways of North
America for the 2003 spring and fall migrations and wrote in his report:
"The relationship of [BLIPMAP] Thermal Updraft Velocity to the preferred
direction of flight over and adjacent to hawk-watch sites proved to be
valuable in locating flights and in predictiong large or small
counts."
Dec 3: Updated the
monthly BLIPMAP usage statistics.
Dec 1:
I was away from home for 6 days and the website unexpectedly hit a
quota limit. I'm not sure whether that caused any problems for
website users, but it has been fixed now.
Nov 22: AOL and aggressive anti-spam
users: For those who have forgotten their
registration password and asked that it be sent to them via the "User
Info Recovery" webpage, I have found that the email sent is being
intercepted by some overly agressive anti-spam filters, so you never
get it!
Oct 30: Website Operational Again:
Yesterday's problems due to my website provider "upgrading" the
website have been fixed and the website is working again.
I only look at the webpages and maps that I use personally or that I suspect might
contain an error. If you notice a consistent problem with either, please let
me know.
Heros:
Thanks to Vit Hradecky of the Greater Boston Soaring Council for hosting
the processing and to John Whitney (F9) for slaying the file-eating
dragon inhabiting the original viewer and adding the "ListSAVE/LOAD"
feature.
I also want to personally thank those whose support is listed on the
Contributors webpage.
